Why Memorial Day?

A great site to visit as we remember the purpose, the mission, the gratitude of a country for our fallen heroes.

HEADQUARTERS GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC

Washington D.C. May 5, 1868

General Orders No. 11

I. The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or other decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but Posts and comrades will, in their own way, arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.

We are organized, Comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose among other things, “of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion.” What can aid more to assure this result than by cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead? We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.

If other eyes grow dull and other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain in us.

Let us, then, at the time appointed, gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with choicest flowers of springtime; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledge to aid and to assist those whom they have left among us as a sacred charge upon the Nation’s gratitude – the soldier’s and sailor’s widow and orphan.

II. It is the purpose of the Commander-in-Chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept up from year to year, while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of his departed comrades. He earnestly desires the public press to call attention to this Order, and lend its friendly aid in bringing it to the notice of comrades in all parts of the country in time for simultaneous compliance therewith.

Department Commanders will use every effort to make this Order effective. By Command of:

N.P. Chipman
John A. Logan
Adjutant General
Commander-in-Chief

Lots ARE available in Tallahassee, consider a custom home!
May 23rd, 2008 11:37 PM
Did you know there are lots available in Tallahassee?  Yes, not all have been bought by builders,.. and not all are advertised.  If you have exhausted your efforts in searching for the perfect re-sale home... consider New Construction.

The time couldnot be better to hand pick your perfect home site and custome home builder. Most are a little slower with the new construction starts being lower than in past years. This will work to your advantage, as you will have more attention than in a market where builders are spread thin, managing several new home construction sites.

Custom home construction need not be a nightmare. It is an opportunity to have a choice in planning the details of a home that will be unique and that you will be proud to showcase when complete!

Local builders in Tallahassee have deep roots in the community. Many are second and third generation contractors and equally as many bring new and innovative design elements and  quality to our new home market.  Knowing these local builders enables me to make the perfect fit for my customers with a builder that fits their needs and their personalities! Yes, it is important to be able to work WITH your builder, while feeling comfortable enough to trust him or her with the many elements of building your home.

Currently I have several subdivisions listed in the Tallahassee and surrounding areas.  Whether you seek large acreage tracts on the Ocholoknee River at River's Edge Subdivision, or a smaller lot within northeast Tallahassee's Bull Run community, I can assist you.

Your search should begin with a discussion with me as your Realtor. The information I will gather for you about possible home sites includes:
  • Obtaining financing for a single lot purchase or a construction/permanent mortgage (there are 100% lot loans available... I closed one today!!)
  • Gathering appropriate subdivision information including restrictive covenants, minimum home size requirements, home owner association documents
  • Lot survey or plat and setback requirements
  • Surrounding neighborhood amenities
  • Zoning and development information
  • Comparable sales and pricing information for comparison shopping

There are many facets to construction as well, including obtaining the perfect house plan, planning the layout on your lot to maximize the use of your lot, and the plans that meet the needs of your family.  Knowing engineers, architects and home design specialists will enable me to connect you with your "detail" team.

My history and lifelong experience with home construction has proven valuable to my customers. Today we broke ground on a custom home in Quincy at Magnolia Forest. Nothing could be a greater reward for me, than seeing well designed plans come to fruition.  Sitting on a deck with my customers is a favorite pastime,.. and knowing I had a small part in it puts a smile on my face!

Looking for new construction in Tallahassee?  Call me, I can't wait to help!
